Google confirmed several spam updates in 2026. Each one improved the automated systems that detect sites breaking its spam policies. Here is how the March, June and August 2026 updates compare – plus the September update that finished in October – and what to do if your traffic moved.

What is a Google spam update?

A spam update improves Google’s spam-detection systems (including its AI-based system, SpamBrain). It is separate from a core update: rather than re-assessing overall quality, it targets pages that violate Google’s spam policies – for example cloaking, doorway pages, hidden text, link schemes, scaled content abuse, site reputation abuse and expired domain abuse.

The 2026 spam updates at a glance

UpdateRollout windowDurationNotes
March 202624–25 MarchAbout 19.5 hoursGlobal, all languages. The fastest confirmed spam update rollout on Google’s Search Status Dashboard. No new policies announced.
June 202624–26 JuneAbout 2 daysNo new spam policies announced.
August 202618–21 AugustAbout 2 days 16 hoursApplied globally to all languages and regions.
September 2026Late September – 8 OctoberAbout 13 days 15 hoursMuch longer rollout; Google did not detail what it targeted.

March 2026: the fastest rollout yet

The March update started on 24 March and Google marked it complete on 25 March – a window of roughly 19.5 hours. Google described it as a normal spam update and did not publish new policies or a companion blog post.

June 2026: a quick, routine update

June’s update ran from 24 to 26 June, around two days. Again, no new spam policies were announced, which suggests Google was improving how it enforces existing rules rather than adding new ones.

August 2026: global and fast

The August update rolled out from 18 to 21 August, about 2 days and 16 hours, and applied to all languages and regions.

And September?

A fourth spam update began in late September and finished on 8 October after about 13 days – far longer than the earlier three. If your traffic changed in late September or early October, check that window too.

What the 2026 updates have in common

  • Short rollouts (except September), so effects appeared within days.
  • No new policies were announced – the focus was enforcement of existing ones.
  • Global scope – Indian sites were affected just like any other.

How to check whether your site was affected

  1. In Google Search Console → Performance, compare clicks and impressions for the week before and after each rollout window.
  2. Open Manual actions and Security issues – a manual action is a separate, human penalty with its own fix process.
  3. Look at which pages dropped. Thin, mass-produced or third-party sections usually explain spam-related losses.
  4. Rule out other causes: core updates, seasonality, site changes or broken tracking.

Recovering from a spam update

Fix the cause rather than waiting: remove or substantially improve scaled thin pages, stop any paid or exchanged links, and remove third-party content that does not fit your site. Google notes that recovery is not instant – after you fix the issues, it can take months for its automated systems to recognise the changes.

Prevention checklist

  • Publish fewer, better pages written by people with real experience.
  • Never buy links or join link exchanges.
  • Review any sponsored or partner content hosted on your domain.
  • Monitor Search Console weekly and keep a log of site changes.
